The FDA has conducted an exploratory survey of cosmetic products that contain talc and cosmetic-grade raw material talc due to concerns the products may contain asbestos.

According to the FDA, no asbestos fibers were found in any of the samples. However, the results were somewhat limited because the FDA only received talc from four suppliers. The survey concluded that the results were informative but do not prove that all cosmetics containing talc sold in the U.S. are asbestos free.

Asbestos Settlements: The total number of UK carriagework employees from York who have passed away from asbestos-related diseases such as mesothelioma has now topped 140, and the true number of deaths may be much higher.

According to the York Press, Arnie “Tivvy” Gomersall worked as a coachbuilder in York factories for years, continually exposing himself to asbestos in the process. Following Gomersall’s recent passing due to mesothelioma, Paul Cooper – a carriageworks trade union official – said that he was the 141st carriageworks employee to pass away from an asbestos related disease.

While that number may seem high, Cooper warned that the true number of deaths attributed to asbestos exposure was likely much higher, as that figure only showed the number of people who had died from mesothelioma and been investigated by inquests in York.

“[The number] excludes people whose mesothelioma may not have been picked up by doctors, which does happen sometimes,” Cooper said. “There will also be others who moved away from York years ago, or who died while being treated in hospitals elsewhere.”

Like many older buildings, the United Nations headquarters in New York City still contains potentially dangerous asbestos products that are only now being removed as part of a $2 billion renovation project.

The mesothelioma death of a UK ship worker has been linked to the long hours he used to work in asbestos-filled factories, according to the deputy coroner who inquired into his death.

Malignant Mesothelioma: According to the Reading Post, 82-year-old Ronald Kennedy used to work 56-hour weeks in factories that contained many asbestos products that he was required to use regularly.

“I can’t recall where the asbestos lagging on board the ships came from, but I can recall that moving of the asbestos would be performed,” said a statement made by Kennedy regarding his working conditions. “I’d then have to apply it to various pipes – mix asbestos powder with water and apply it as a paste.”

In March 2010 Kennedy was admitted to the hospital to undergo x-rays on his chest that revealed “a considerable amount of fluid” had built up. He was diagnosed with epithelioid mesothelioma in May, 2010, and died from the asbestos disease in December 2011.

Pericardial Mesothelioma: In the inquest that followed Kennedy’s death, Deputy Coroner Ravi Sidhu confirmed that it “was that asbestos [in the factories] that caused the mesothelioma that caused [Kennedy’s] death. He added that the official cause of death had been listed as “the industrial disease of malignant mesothelioma.”
